Welcome to the Research Student pages
The Computer Science Department supports a large, active postgraduate community studying on both research and taught programmes. These pages provide information about the Department's research study programmes - programmes which rely solely or substantially on individual research. Students on these programmes benefit from membership of a world-class research centre which was rated 5A in the last Research Assessment Exercise. A series of seminars and workshops presented both by members of the Department and by visiting academics helps to provide a stimulating environment within which students may pursue their research.
(Information about the taught post-graduate programmes can be found here.)
For the induction schedule for new research students starting in September 2011 see here.
Research Degrees
MPhil/PhD | This is normally a three year programme of research under the supervision of a member of the academic staff. Students work within one of the nine research groups within the department and often collaborate with several members of the academic and research staff as well as with other students. Further details of the MPhil/PhD programme can be found here. |
| EngD | This is four year a programme of research in industry in combination with advanced postgraduate training. Two programmes are offered; Eng D in Virtual Environments, Imaging and Visualisation VEIV) in conjunction with the Bartlet School and EngD in Communications Engineering in conjunction with the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering. |
| PhD in Financial Computing | The PhD in Financial Computing is four year a programme designed specifically for research and work in the financial services. It is run in conjuction with LSE and the London Business School and with partners in industry. See the Financial Computing PhD website for more information. |
Joining the Department
UCL has a Central Admission Procedure and anyone wishing to apply for postgraduate study at UCL must submit a standard application form to be considered. We do not accept CVs alone.
For entry to the department's MPhil/PhD programme please see the accompanying pages on entry and language requirements, and the department's deadlines and application process before completing the forms.
For Financial Computing and the EngD VEIV see the respective websites for admissions information and procedures, which can vary.
Funding
The Department of Computer Science has some funding available each year for home and EU PhD students. We have no scholarships or employment opportunities for overseas PhD applicants. Our overseas PhD students either have scholarships from their home countries, industrial sponsorships, private funds or loans.
The UCL Graduate School has a competition for scholarships once a year, but this is vastly oversubscribed, and only applicants with absolutely outstanding academic results and some evidence of research excellence (publications) have any chance to be considered.
Information about funding opportunities in general for research students can be found here and instructions on applying for UCL Scolarships through the department of Computer Science here.
